By allowing ourselves the freedom to experience something new in the creative process the more we are able to reveal the unknown. Our ability to do this is reliant on how well we can open to our subconscious. I believe many artists work this way. The surprise revelations we receive are often the underlying reason we love to create art. It’s certainly the reason I do.
These rooms are composites of different layers of my life; the past, the future, my inner turmoil and my fear. The seemingly randomness of these images makes gathering up a quick meaning for them a bit illusive to the viewer. However, I invite you to feel your way through them and come to your own insights.
“Looking Back” is a composite of parts of many previously completed images. The child standing in the light of the background looks into the rooms of memories and early imprints. She has become the observer and not the participant. Stepping out of the chaos is a first important step.
As she looks inside she sees the doll representing old fears. The seated figure on the right is the artist. The calendar is the timelessness of it all and there are old bits of memories of home and schools. It feels a bit confining, like a tidy package of things to clear out.
In “Burning of the Past” the girl has moved forward and out of the chaos. The house and all that it represents is burning away the imprints of her past, leaving the archetypes in place that she wants to embrace. The artist and the spirit guides remain and the child has been set free.
We’ve now stepped into a new place. The hand on the left pulls back the veil and allows us to view the current scene. The main figure stands in the fire and then evolves upwards into a strangely beaked character with a swan by its ear. The head seems to have another veil of sorts shrouding the face. The figure on the right is the always present spirituality, whispering truths to the smaller woman. An ancestor hangs below on the bottom right, perhaps as a reminder of where she has come from. On the upper left are parts of an ancient oracle card: just let the experience unfold. The more our heart opens up, the more we will feel that things are working out just as they are suppose too. It’s sometimes beautiful and sometimes ecstatic and always perfect.
